Registering a newborn when you live outside Greece

When a child of Greek or diaspora parents is born abroad, the birth is recorded first by the local authorities of the country of birth — but that record is not automatically reflected in the Greek registers. To bring it into the Greek system, the foreign birth certificate is legalised with a Hague Apostille, translated into Greek by a sworn translator, and then filed with the competent Ληξιαρχείο, after which the child can be issued an ΑΦΜ with ΑΑΔΕ. What the process involves

Obtaining the foreign birth certificate issued by the authorities of the country of birth, in the form they release for use abroad
Legalising that certificate with a Hague Apostille (Σφραγίδα της Χάγης) so it is recognised by the Greek authorities
A certified translation into Greek, prepared by a sworn translator and signed with a Qualified Electronic Signature
Filing the translated, apostilled certificate with the competent Ληξιαρχείο, after which an ΑΦΜ can be issued for the child through ΑΑΔΕ

Documents usually needed

The child's foreign birth certificate in an internationally usable form
Identity documents for the parents, together with proof of the Greek parent's own registration in the Greek registers
Where relevant, the marriage record of the parents, apostilled and translated in the same way as the birth certificate
A limited power of attorney allowing the filing and the ΑΦΜ request to be handled remotely on the family's behalf
